Spring blossoms – Keukenhof Garden, Netherlands
What symbolizes spring more than the great blossoming of flowers? If you’re a fan of tulips and are in the Netherlands, you should head down to the famous Keukenhof garden to check out the flower gardens there.
From Amsterdam, you can head over on the Keukenhof shuttle bus that would pick you up from Schiphol Airport. Arrive early as the bus line tends to go really long even with them bringing in busses every 5-10 minutes or so. It’ll take about 30 minutes to get there.
You can choose to buy the entrance tickets from Amsterdam itself or online. However don’t worry even if you don’t have a ticket as you can also buy them at the garden itself, though be prepared for a queue. Current ticket price is EU 15 for adults.
Open only in April and May, don’t expect to walk into a whole field of flowers. The gardens is designed exactly like that. It’s a vast park area with pockets of squares where beautiful flowers are blooming. They also have special pavilions that showcase different themes like romance or music. Enjoy a full day walking around and perhaps consider bringing a picnic to enjoy by one of their lakes.
If a field of tulips is what you were looking for, then you definitely need to go early in the morning and head over immediately to the windmill. Next to it is where you can get tickets to go on the whisperboat, a small boat that will actually take you around the fields of tulips. I myself arrived a little too late and couldn’t get a spot on the boat unfortunately.
Bring a jacket no matter what, especially if you’re planning for a full day as the weather can change quite drastically. Even when I went in April, it was about 5 degrees then. If you weren’t planning on bringing any food, no worries as there are some restaurants there, though expect to get in line with everyone else who happens to have the munchies.
Happy Spring everyone! And hope you enjoy the gardens as much as I did.
